Part I – The Miracle Device
Robert hit the accelerator. His body sank into the seat as his supercharged electric car doubled the speed in seconds, racing through the light just as it turned red. A sly smirk and arrogant chuckle flashed, then vanished. He was running later to the office than he wanted to arrive. Robert lived his life as an overachiever and enjoyed the profits of the game. Acquiring the latest toys, Robert loved showing them off.
His sleek car pulled in his spot and he hopped out, allowing the engine to shut off for itself as he walked away. The doors automatically locked. The car beeped goodbye as Robert approached the office door. He walked up behind Mitchel, fumbling for his keycard with coffee in one hand and breakfast in the other.
“Let me get that for you.”
Robert reached his hand out and the green security light triggered on his approach and opened up the lock.
“You should really get your chip before they take away the tax credit, Mitchel.”
The colleague nodded his head. “The keycard might be inconvenient, but I like it all the same.”
“Suit yourself. It would just make opening the door with full hands that much easier,” Robert offered.
“I know, I know,” Mitchel said, taking his turn to the right when Robert went left.
Robert continued walking down the hall until he reached the security door leading to his wing. His hand just had to reach for the door, and it swung open.
“Hi Sally,” he said, turning into his office.
“Good morning, Mr. Miller,” Sally said in a cheerful tone, but keeping her eyes fixed on the computer screen.
Robert sat at his desk and waved his hand near the mouse, and the computer logged in.
“30 emails. Wonderful.”
Robert browsed the subject lines, catching his eye on a few microchip automation projects. Since he received his microchip, he had signed up for several product lists of activation options. It seemed he was becoming addicted to finding new things to do with his implant. He felt his whole life becoming easier, and he actively looked for ways to make it easier still.
Robert spent the hour hammering away at emails and revising his upcoming company conference notes. Robert’s job as head of security for the office required him to update policies, conforming the company to the recently passed CHIP Act. His presentation was to inform the company about the changes to the security policies to account for the government program rolling out now.
“Mr. Miller, the conference is starting soon,” Sally interrupted.
“Thank you. I am just about ready. You can head down if you’re ready, and I’ll lock up here.”
Robert switched off the computer monitor and stretched his hands out before putting his jacket back on. He walked out of the door, closed it and waved his hand by the lock like a Jedi. The light flashed red, and the lock clicked. Robert smiled and turned down the hall.
