I – The Maniac
“Come on son, I won’t hurt you,” officer Johnson said with de-escalation in his voice.
“NO! I MUST KNOW WHAT’S REAL,” countered the strange young man, screaming at the top of his lungs.
The officer lowered his voice, signaling more silence, as the yells echoed to the far corners of the cemetery, being muffled only by the darkness setting in.
“You are not in trouble, but we need to find out who you are. Do you have any ID?”
“I HAVE TO FIND THE TRUTH!” he yelled again.
“What truth?” The officer asked, “We can look for it together if you come with me.”
“The truth about everything,” the teenager said, finally collapsing in tears.
He lay for a moment sobbing on the ground. Johnson gently grabbed his hand and softly rubbed the top.
“I’ll help you find it,” he whispered.
He firmed his grip and rose the boy onto his feet. The boy followed along without resistance. Johnson opened the back door of his patrol car and placed the teenager in the rear passenger seat. Once inside his car, Johnson picked up the radio.
“I’m taking this kid to the hospital. He appears to be having a psychotic break. Get CPS there. He is clearly a teen, but I don’t know who he is.”
The officer placed the car into drive and turned out of the cemetery.
“What’s your name, son?” he said in a gentle voice.
“Jeff.” he replied.
“Do you have a last name, Jeff?”
“I don’t know. I don’t know if anything is real anymore.”
“Do you know what it might be?”
“No. I don’t know what’s real anymore.”
“Did you try any drugs tonight, Jeff?”
Johnson thought the current string of acid going around town among the teens could cause his outbursts, though Jeff didn’t have the dilated eyes, and something seemed amiss about the whole situation.
“Drugs are stupid,” he replied, “and these questions will not help us find the truth.”
The patrol car stopped in front of a hospital. Johnson picked up the radio to announce the patient’s arrival to the hospital staff.
“We don’t need to handcuff you, do we?” he finally called out to Jeff.
The officer looked back to see Jeff resting his head on the window with a soft tear gently rolling down his cheek. “Is everything a lie?” he mumbled to the air.
Two large men in white coats approached the car. Johnson got out and met with them outside. Jeff couldn’t hear the resulting conversation, but the door opened, and a man named Michael knelt down to be at eye level.
“It’s OK son, we will help you find the truth.”
He reached out his hand. Jeff looked at the outreached extremity and hesitated for a few seconds, staring at it, as if he wondered what to do. Finally, he reached out his own hand, and they met. The powerful man meekly pulled him from the car, and the four people walked inside.
